Our approach

We're committed to realising economic regeneration for a brighter future.

Our approach focuses on fostering a local network of sustainable, community-driven enterprises that prioritise environmental regeneration, community resilience and social well-being.

We're at our best and happiest when we see our community supporting local businesses to start up, connect with one another and scale up.

Our thinking

We set out to pioneer a process of community-led economic regeneration that prioritises local need, environmental regeneration and social wellbeing.

We believe a more localised and less energy-hungry economy makes us more resilient and better able to address, mitigate and adapt to social and economic inequality, energy price volatility, the climate crisis and environmental breakdown.

We aim to create an environment where new economic actors and relationships flourish and community-supported enterprises lead the change.

Unlocking an entrepreneurial, solution-focussed culture and a local movement of community supported enterprise.

HOW IT BEGAN

Our starting point was to create an economic blueprint.

Setting out, we understood we would need to do two things.

First, we would need to understand the current conditions of our local economy and identify the potential for regeneration and investment in positive change.  This led to the Local Economic Blueprint.

Second, our work should create the conditions for new economic actors and new economic relationships to emerge and flourish, which led to the Local Entrepreneur Forum and the Reconomy Centre.

"The Purpose of our local economy is to maximise the happiness and wellbeing of our entire community - to create an abundance of opportunity to satisfy our needs, and use and distribute resources fairly, in a way that respects natural limits."

A brief history…

Much work led up to the establishement of the Reconomy Project Totnes, and much continues in parallel and in collaboration.

We emerged from the Business and Livelihoods group of Transition Town Totnes, in the wake of the publicity created by the Totnes Pound and the success of the Transition Streets Project.

For a timeline of some key moments in our history, including links to related reports and research, follow here.

Imagining the economy we do want

In the early days of Transition Town Totnes' Economics and Livelihoods Group, we spent time visioning a resilient, localised economy, that provided for a vibrant, healthy community. We drew on the initiatives and ideas that were emerging at the time, and identified those with potential to be the most transformational.

Want more?

We are keen to meet groups who are interested in our work.

We have run study visits for students of all ages, business groups, councillors, NGOs and community organisers.

We know how to make this stuff engaging, relevent and fun!

We can organise study visits to Totnes or run a workshop or give a talk at yours.
